TEENAGERS LOVE TECHNOLOGY, often besting their parents at manipulating an iPad or streaming music. This home theater stands up to the rigors of tech-savvy teenage children and their friends, yet is high-class enough to comfortably accommodate more discerning viewers.

“This is not only the preferred space for sleepovers, it’s also an escape for adults and—with extensive sound isolation—a quiet place for the homeowner to take a nap,” says David Devanna, a home systems designer at Electronics Design Group (EDG), of Piscataway, N.J., who helped created this award-winning space. The homeowner also has a very large extended family that converges on his home for holidays and special events. With two rows of theater seats and a rear bar and sitting area for food and drink, the theater can comfortably hold a big crowd.

Because having a home theater was so important to the family, they were very involved in the planning of it. Having previously built two home theaters, they had a vision and a strict budget in mind. “Basements in this part of the country tend to be big, and homeowners can fill them with all sorts of fun things,” says Devanna. “However, they sometimes feel pressured to make decisions early on. As budgets are spent elsewhere, those priorities evolve and homeowners change their minds. This was one of the biggest challenges on this project as the homeowners’ desires were a moving target.”

After many design iterations, one of which included a golf simulator, the homeowners settled on a 23x17x10-foot home theater and an adjoining wine tasting area. To keep noise from the theater from leaking out into the surrounding area, the addition of acoustical isolation was crucial. “Sometimes, spending a few thousand dollars on acoustics improves a room more than adding more speakers or amplifiers would,” says Devanna. AcousticSmart absorptive, reflective and diffusive acoustic system treatments were carefully designed and installed to make the Bowers & Wilkins (B&W) in-wall custom theater speakers and dual 8-inch subwoofers sound their best while minimizing sound leakage.

A Savant control system offers an easy way to manage all of the room’s electronic features. To satisfy the control savviness of both young and old home theater users, EDG provided the family with a couple of types of control devices, including a remote and a Savant app accessible on an iPad and iPhone. By combining the best of traditional and au courant technology, EDG was able to please both the adults and the resident technology aficionados—that is to say, the teens—alike. EH
